Indium is a very soft, silvery-white metal with a low melting point of 156,60 °C. The worldwide available resources of indium are estimated at 16,000 t. However, only about two thirds of these are economically mineable. Indium is very rarely found in elemental form, so it is almost exclusively obtained as a by-product in the production of zinc or lead from sulphide ores.
